A Gringa meets an Elephant

Here's a link to an interview I did with Adventures of a Gringa, a blog maintained by Rachel Glickhouse about all things Rio.

Excerpt:

What are some of the possible "white elephant" projects that will result from Rio's mega-events?
It is easier to talk about the “non-white” elephants, and that’s a short conversation. Nearly everything under construction for the mega-events is being done with an urban plan that was created behind closed doors, and with little thought for the usefulness of the projects post-2016. I think they should actually paint everything white and put big ears on just to remind us.

  1. Hello Christopher.

Interesting POV learning what you think from in interview.

    Very Pessimistic lol

It would be VERY interesting to get a play-by-play of what needs to be done, by who and by when if you could have YOUR way.

    Thanks.

  2. Thanks Bianca,

I do have my opinions about what should be done by whom and how, but the important thing that we have to remember in making these arguments against the way things are done right now is that this needs to be a participatory and collaborative process. If I were to venture a proposal, it would have about as much validity as the current one. The whole point is to change the way the mega-event industrial complex operates - my work is of course implicated in that system and by trying to expose its mechanisms, try to shift something to the positive side of the balance.

  3. Hello Chris.

Well that is a non answer answer :)

May I suggest an open letter to Mayor Eduardo Paes?

Clearly you have many concerns and as a American professor in Brazil I'm sure it would have great interest just like the American ambassador who spoke out about the level of corruption which was featured in VEJA.

I appreciate your insight I just would like to know what would be your solutions.

    Cheers.
